SEAM for KANO:

Creative Reset

A digital sewing system for consumer electronics brand KANO, the SEAM project is a celebration of Central Saint Martins' rich fashion heritage, exploring how technology can be used as a tool to pioneer more decentralised and collaborative streams of clothing consumption and design.
Kano is a brand with a focus around education and positivity, responding to human factors. We were approached to expand the brand's thinking in completely new ways, designing for devices which embody the concept of “emotionally driven tech”, maintaining the good parts of our everyday technologies and expanding upon them (connectivity, togetherness, collaboration, expression) while stripping out aspects that are harmful or superfluous.
A boom in creative experimentation emerged as a global coping mechanism during the pandemic, creating radical transformation and reassessment across creative industries. Digital platforms offered new ways to foster collaboration during isolation, creating a new cultural ecosystem of Gen Z social crafting. New business models emerged as brands struggled with unprecedented times, and began to embrace the DIY appeal of slowly emerging platforms like Depop, Tiktok, and Instagram, selling home patterns and kits to allow customers to create their products from home.
SEAM explores this intersection of traditional crafting and technologized platforms, providing a suite of intuitive and experience-driven tools for a generation of digital natives.
